Phi (Microsoft) Overview

Phi is a family of compact language models from Microsoft Research that proves small models can be remarkably capable. Phi-4, with 14 billion parameters, competes with models 10 times its size on reasoning and coding tasks.

How It Works

Microsoft trains Phi on carefully curated, high-quality data, including synthetic examples. This allows compact models to achieve quality comparable to much larger counterparts. Phi-4 Reasoning adds a chain-of-thought reasoning mode.

Key Capabilities

Phi is available under the MIT license and can run on a regular laptop or even a smartphone. Models are accessible via Azure AI, Hugging Face, and Ollama. Phi-4 Reasoning Plus shows excellent results on mathematical and logical tasks.
